The reality is as follows: during several years, I nearly forgot everything I studied immediately after the lesson. Ebbinghaus forgetting curve demonstrated that I was not alone. I did not quit; I organized a strange memory search. One day I came across a Notion flashcard system and, amazingly enough, I was able to keep things in my head without melting my brain. I am now presenting you my routine, warts and all. Believe me, flashcards do not have to be so dull to use this technique.
Why We Forget Everything and How Notion Flashcards Help
Most of us have sat down to study and take an exam and the following day we forget most of the answers. The answer was discovered by researchers, it is the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, according to which, within 24 hours, we forget up to 70% of new information. I am all too familiar with this fact after failing a pop quiz- despite spending all the weekend with my notes. The fact is that memory leaks are not the problem that is specific to students only; they can ruin the efforts of any person who attempts to learn something new.
Since that error, I experimented with every memory trick. They were monotonous and dull and I soon gave them up. I then sought smarter and more sustainable means of studying better. Spaced repetition learning and active recall would not stop appearing, so I tried them. I have chosen Notion, which allows me to test new ideas, and I wanted to do something new.
How I Built My Personal Flashcard System
I discovered Notion late at night when I was scrolling YouTube (as a procrastinator would do). Initially it was completely overpowering with all these buttons and options. Then I observed a demo of the flashcards of Notion. My brain was illuminated. I was crazy about the concept of creating my own digital flashcards in each topic. After a single day, I almost gave up, but the versatile templates made me interested. I developed a flash card template that fitted my disorganized thinking process. My collection of flashcard decks is now sorted by subject, languages, driving test, even random trivia. I can easily know what I have already mastered and what needs reviewing. Studies indicate that these digital flashcards increase retention and make the study process less disorganized and more personal.
Creating Notion Flashcards That Don't Bore Your Brain
I create Notion sticky flashcards. When I want to add a new flashcard I click on new flashcard, enter the question, enter the answer and add it to a deck. I occasionally add emojis or drawings to the cards since studying does not have to be boring. The strangest card I have is a cheese law that is fictional. I find it funny to this day.
I categorize flashcards or group them into sets so that my random interests are neat and I do not feel overwhelmed. The revealable answers provide me the sweet sensation of the aha moment, and this makes me recall more. Studies indicate that customizing your cards and making them funny will make review sessions less tedious, and much easier to remember.
How I Schedule Flashcards for Better Retention
The brain is not all about luck or cramming. Using Notion spaced repetition, I do not accumulate flashcards; they appear just at the time when I am going to forget them. Notion employs adaptive scheduling, thus every card will reappear on a personalized schedule depending on how familiar I am with it. To illustrate, when I put a card to be confident, it would be returned after seven days. I will see it every day in case I am still learning it. These stages of reviewing flashcards keep me on my toes- and on track, most especially when I monitor my score. Difficult cards remain with me until I learn them and the easy ones just wait in the wings. No more brainless study times. Studies indicate that this method will aid in long-term retention and review efficiency, so my study time will be much more efficient (and less stressful).
Tracking Your Learning Without the Stress
I adore my Notion flashcard dashboard, as it is simple to keep track of the progress. With each review session, I press a single button, no micromanaging, no stress. I only count the cards that I really looked at, which makes it honest and helps to optimize the study. The dashboard is gratifying: I can immediately know how many cards I have mastered, which cards I have to revise, and even see my streaks at a glance. When I am feeling overwhelmed, I will put old or irrelevant cards in archived status, it is like a digital declutter of my brain. This flashcard organization is good enough to make me keep returning and studies have found that basic logging and dashboards visualization are highly motivating. Moreover, I have features that I have not touched yet, so I understand that my system can develop with me.
Customizing Your Notion Flashcard Template
I am yet to discover the capabilities of Notion templates, and this is thrilling. The more you familiarise yourself with your Notion flashcard system, the more you will discover to assist yourself. You are able to add categories to sort your topics, and there is a convenient explanation button which allows you to add additional information directly on each card. My template is completely free and can be altered in numerous ways. You may combine flashcards with notes, schedules, or any other secret productivity hacks that you prefer. Studies indicate that such imaginative blends enhance a more effective and personal learning. Thus, this flashcard system in Notion will be used both before exams and when you are simply interested in something.
Building a Notion System That Remembers When You Can't
I do not memorize anything, yet my flashcard system in the Notion now does it. Research indicates that digital flashcards and the spaced repetition allow us to work with rather than against our natural memory curve. Learning is not merely stuffing the brain with bits of information; learning is about deciding what to learn and when. Notion is a repair kit to my bucket of leaky memory. The reviewing is not so stressful, not to mention that it is even enjoyable. Would you like to streamline your studying process? Then use my template or create your own variation. Accept these weird features of your memory, stop being afraid of forgetting, and become a member of an expanding community of Notion flashcard experimenters.
