How to use Notion

October 26, 2025

Have you ever been frustrated about the fact you forget new information so fast? The forgetting curve of Ebbinghaus shows us a brutal truth, that within a day we can lose up to seventy percent of new information. I despised that and so I came up with a Notion flashcard system which is aimed to make me remember what I study without burning out. Here is one of the simplest yet effective flashcard templates that I use in the organization and revision of information and in this article, I will share how it works, how it can help you organize and revise the information you need to learn and how you can use it to level up your learning.

Introduction to Notion flashcard system dashboard

Why Use a Notion Flashcard System?

The normal way of taking notes and passive reviewing does not usually keep the information active in your mind. Active recall and spaced repetition are the two concepts that flashcards are best at and are the key to retention. But it can easily become hectic to maintain flashcards in various subjects or topics. Such a system as my Notion flashcard system is where you come in: it is a customizable, centralized, and convenient template to design, organize, and monitor all your flashcards to streamline the process.

Overview of the Notion Flashcard System Layout

To give you a better insight into how the system helps your learning be orderly and effective, let us dissect the layout of the system.

Flashcard Collections

The flashcard collections are on the upper part of the dashboard. The feature allows you to create flashcards in categories (by topic or purpose), which keeps everything well organized. To illustrate, my language learning flashcards are not kept in the same set as the flashcards I use to study in order to pass my driver test.

The collections view also provides valuable stats at a glance:

  • The total number of flashcards in each collection

  • How many flashcards you’ve mastered

  • How many flashcards are due for review today

It is easy to create a new collection. All you have to do is press the New Collection button on the quick access panel, give your collection a name and you can start adding cards.

The quick access panel can be used to add new flashcards. Select the button New Flashcard, and type in your question and answer. It is also possible to add the flashcard to a certain collection to keep things organized.

Flashcards Section: Active Learning Hub

As you scroll down, you will reach the core of the system the flashcards section. It is where the real learning occurs, and there are several tabs that will help you to navigate through the review sessions.

The Today tab will show all the flashcards that you should review according to your progress and the state of every card. This will make you concentrate on what should be done without being overwhelmed.

Each flashcard shows important info such as:

  • The last time you reviewed it

  • The next scheduled review date

  • How many times you’ve studied this card

During your review, you can reveal the answer by checking the “Show Answer” box. After considering the answer, update the card’s status to one of the following:

  • To Revisit: if you need to review it again soon

  • Confident: if you feel comfortable but want to revisit later

  • Mastered: if you’ve confidently memorized the information

This status update helps the system decide when to show the card again for optimal spaced repetition.

How the System Schedules Reviews

You might wonder how the system determines the next review date for each flashcard. It uses your input on the card’s status combined with a simple scheduling table:

  • If a card is marked as Confident, it will be scheduled for review in seven days.

  • If a card is still Learning, it will be reviewed daily.

  • Cards marked To Revisit will be scheduled sooner for reinforcement.

This method mimics the scientifically backed spaced repetition technique, which combats the forgetting curve effectively.

Logging Your Study Sessions

Once you are done with your review, press the Log Study button. The flashcards you checked the box to show answer will only be counted as reviewed. This will update your progress and tell the system which cards were studied and keep your review schedule up to date.

In case a flashcard is outdated or useless, it can be archived with ease to clear up your workspace.
