How to use Notion

July 13, 2025

Moods are usually taken granted, but they secretly constitute our experiences and health. I used to ignore my moods in the belief that they were trivial. However, as soon as I began to follow them everything became different. Monitoring my moods was a great way to finally learn what actually happened inside of me, and Notion became my instrument in this process. In this article, I’ll share exactly how I use a Notion mood tracker system to monitor my emotions and build a consistent journaling habit that supports mental clarity and personal growth.

Understanding the Layout of the Notion Mood Tracker System

My mood tracking system is on a Notion dashboard that is customized, easy to use, and easy to see. The right side has a card, which is referred to as mood management and it is the master database where I add all moods that I wish to observe.

To introduce a new mood, I press on new mood, enter a title, select an icon and a color, which represents that mood. The secret sauce is this color-coding since it drives the visual heat map in my calendar.

For example, I tag “angry” with red, “joy” with green, and “surprise” with yellow. I label every day with mood and the colors are automatically represented as a heat map. This gives me an emotional map which I can read in a glance over the month.

Tracking Your Journaling Streak and Reviewing Past Months

On the memos card of the dashboard next to the mood heat map, there is a journaling streak tracker. It is a little but effective motivator, particularly when you are developing the habit of journaling every day.

In case you want to check your mood history or journal entries of the previous months, you just need to choose the month you want to see in the dropdown menu of the memos card. This simplifies reflection in the long run.

Creating Daily Journal Entries with Mood and Energy Metrics

The heart of the system lies in the today tab, where I open a new journal entry each day. Clicking “new page” under this section automatically creates a predated journal entry categorized as "today's entry," so you don't need to name or tag it manually.

At the beginning of every journal, I select my mood and write down the amount of energy I feel in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. I also write down the levels of my focus and the stress I experience. Then the journal sums all these numbers and provides me with one energy score of the day, which is my favorite part. Although I may not want to write much, this brief check still informs me a lot about my overall performance.

Customizable Journaling Prompts for Your Notion Mood Tracker

Below the mood and energy inputs, the journaling template is preloaded with 4 thoughtful sections:

  • Events and activities: What happened during the day?

  • Today's learnings: What new insights did you gain?

  • Gratitude of the day: What are you thankful for?

  • Reflection and thoughts: Space for deeper contemplation.

The default page does not necessarily fit. In case you want to edit it, tap on the three-dot menu beside the current page, tap on edit and edit or replace the sections. The new layout will be applied to all future entries, which means that the system remains adaptable and fits your journaling style.

Why Combine a Notion Mood Tracker and Journal Template?

It is not always easy to start journaling, but combining mood tracking with daily reflections allows you to get two benefits with one stone: you will be more emotionally aware and have a stable, daily writing habit. A visual heat map will translate the general sense of things into hard data that you can analyze in the long run and will tell you what causes mood changes, what patterns are reoccurring, and which areas you should develop.

The built in motivation of this tool is also assistive. Streak tracking and automatic calculations allow one to continue even when days are hard.

Therefore, mood tracking together with daily writing is an easy and efficient method of developing self-knowledge and a daily habit.
